Ryan Patrick Vineyards 2006 Rock Island Red wine

Another early WAwineman classic, 1st posted on September 28, 2008:

If you saw Heather Locklear’s mug shot Sunday, you know she hasn’t been drinking WA wines recently. The WAwineman declined a “living goddess” appointment by Nepal, being that he is the “most electrifying blogger in wine entertainment today”. Let’s drink to UCLA finding a 13-million digit prime number. Them Cali folks probably spent a million buckaroos hooking up 75 computers, then discovering a most useless product that won’t bailout the economy or even help the Huskies or Cougars win a single football game this season. I bet they celebrated by drinking two-buck Chuck. Love those Mariners for losing when they had to win and winning when they had to lose. And you thank WAwineman for picking the first couple in tonight’s Amazing Race 13. Yes, yes, please, no autographs.

Tonight’s temptation is another offering from Ryan Patrick Vineyards, next to the mighty Columbia in Quincy. September is red wine month so I had to open this one up after a hard day of…napping. Hey, gotta save up my energy for next weekend’s shindig at Mark Ryan’s enclave. There’s a new tasting room, but it’s in Leavenworth. This winery is not an easy find in these parts as they make less than 15,000 cases/year and no branch office nearby. That’s where Costco comes in. $12.49 is quite a deal after snookering up $125 for the same bottle quantity of a Grand Ciel. Didn’t have much expectation so I paired this with a simple beef stew on rice, with spiced vegetables on the side. I found the wine to be quite fluffy…more of an appetizer than a main course headliner. No serious flaws but it sure won’t distract from whatever it is you are doing while analyzing this sipper.

Nose: black cherry, blackberries, Arabica cherry with a mild sting of heat. Mouthfeel: viscous, loaded. Tail trail: 5 seconds. Flavors: cherry cold medicine, Bing cherry, black currant.

Columbia Valley AVA. Alcohol: 14.1%. Merlot 57%, cab sau 37%, cab franc 6%. 16 months in oak, French/USA. TA 0.54g/100mL. pH 3.60. 2860 cases. Rated: 80. Value: $13. Paid: $13. This is WAwineman…uncorked, uneducated but not uncouth.
